Lava is molten rock. It is the made up of the same thing that magma is. We use the word lava to describe molten rock above the ground and magma to describe molten rock below the ground.
As well as molten rock, lava is made up of crystals and gases like steam (so, in a way, there is some boiling water in there!), and carbon dioxide.
There are lots of different types of magma. Some, like the picture in my profile, is quite runny and makes pretty lava flows. Others are quite sticky and make domes of lava. What kind of rock the lava is made of decides whether it is sticky or runny.
Hello again 🙂
Lava is hot boiling rocks! Think how hot it must be to get a rock to MELT 🙂 And we complain when we have to sit in the sunshine for too long… 😉
