Cancer can be quite a difficult disease to get rid of. It’s made more complicated because each type of cancer is essentially a unique disease. This means that they can need very different treatments. It is unlikely that we will ever discover something that cures all cancers, but we’re doing a pretty good job of finding different treatments for each one.

Generally though, getting rid of cancer can have multiple stages. Once the cancer is diagnosed the oncologist (a special cancer doctor) decides on the best treatment for the person (old people might have a different treatment to young people). These treatments come under three main groupings: surgery (where they remove the cancer), radiotherapy (where they use radiation to kill the cancer cells) and chemotherapy (where they use toxic chemicals to kill the cancer cells). Often the doctor will recommend a combination of treatments to make it more likely to succeed.

If these treatments work and the cancer is reduced in size or gone completely then the person is in “remission” which basically means the cancer is gone but may come back in the future.

I hope this answers your question. If you want more information about the treatments, diagnosis or remission then let me know, I’d be happy to explain more.
