Thanks from your winner, Becky

THANK YOU!

I am so excited to have won the Praseodymium Zone. A huge thank you to all the students, the teachers, the I’m a Scientist team, and the other scientists Charli, Oliver, Heather and Dre.

Most of all though, thank you to the students. I miss logging in every morning, eager to see what new questions you asked me. I enjoyed answering every question. I was amazed at the huge range of questions that you asked. Some of the questions were very hard and I had to think a long time before answering them. Some of the questions were about things I didn’t know much about and I enjoyed spending my evenings looking things up. I learnt so many new things! Most of all, I liked talking about volcanoes. I love my job, getting to study volcanoes is good fun and I hope you enjoyed learning some more about them.

It was really great to chat to you on the live chats, though sometimes I couldn’t read and type fast enough! Your energy and excitement was inspiring, I only hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did. I also hope that you learnt some new things, but most of all, learnt what being a scientist is all about.

For every question about the world that you may have, there will be scientists studying it. Some scientists work in labs, some work outside and some do their research by talking to people. But all of us have normal lives and have hobbies just like you. To be a scientist all you need to be is nosey; ask a lot of questions and always want to be learning new things. I think many of you are scientists-in-the-making!

I really am honoured that so many of you voted for me and I’m really excited to build my virtual reality volcano. I’ll need to buy a kinect, a sandbox and do some computer programming before it is up and running. But then I hope to take it to science fairs and visit schools with it, maybe I could even visit yours! I’ll keep you updated on how I get on.

Thank you again,

Becky
